Dysplasia is a condition, often present at birth, in which the acetabulum (socket part of the hip joint) does not fully cover the femoral head (ball portion of the hip joint).
This lack of coverage can lead to an increased risk of hip dislocation. Dysplasia varies widely in severity. Dysplasia can often lead to increased degeneration, or wear and tear of the joint, due to the abnormal structure of the hip.
